My first trip to Japan.

”Marijuana – You are in my house.”  AKA The first thing I saw when I got off the plane

Being in back in Canada has left me feeling strangely detached from Japan. So I thought I’d get back to my roots and chronicle my first trip there: a trip to Kansai in 2002.

It was my graduating year of high school and I was having the time of my life – quite possibly no time has been as fun as 2002-2003 for me.

I had been on an airplane many times before, but this was my first time up in the air for 10 hours straight… and my first time with peers (9 classmates and 2 teachers).  Me and two really close friends, whom I’ll name Chandler and Rachel, whiled away the time taking turns writing dumb lines of poetry and short story (see below – each colour represents a separate person):

I danced many a time;

the super dance of space and

hotels went rocketing through

my tightly wound shorts

which hurt my bump very

painfully.

(Taken from my journal – names changed) Day 3: This night doesn’t end.  I’ve woken up so many times.  Chandler and I crashed in Rachel and Monica’s room… just because.  I felt sorry for leaving Gunther, our little buddy for the trip, alone in our room with the balcony door wide open, and a big dog on the other roof.  We got here yesterday… Sunday… and left home early Saturday.  We were only flying 10 1/2 hours (yeah, ONLY 10 1/2 hours) but the time zones and… ugh.

View from the hostel.

(continued…) The hostel we’re in is wee.  It’s kind of a run-down area of town..  Not scummy.. Just old.  We went on a vending machine raid in our robes last night.  Very cultural.

There’s English everywhere, and the fact that I’m here hasn’t hit home yet (maybe it never will).  I feel so welcome here.  Everyone is so nice.

Vending Machine Raid.  I dyed my hair fuchsia for the occasion. :)

I’m glad it’s only 5am… Only a few hours till wakey-time and breakfast.  I want to call Hikari today.

Thank God for delivering us safely~

Oh my gosh look at your little baby face! The first time I dyed my hair, I was 14 and it went fuchsia… I have been having the urge to add color but it’s all the rage right now. I don’t want to get confused with one of the hip kids and have to defend my honor. Also why is fuchsia spelled foo-chia but not pronounced foo-chia.
