Happy (belated) New Year, everyone! Any New Year resolutions?
I have a few:
- get my drivers licence (aka Operation Kill the Planet)
- start investing in a retirement savings plan (aka Operation Hope I Haven’t Yet Killed the Planet When I’m 70)
- write a comic book (aka MY LIFE DREAM)
- start thinking about long-term work (aka Reality)
Having a job that I can carry with me wherever I go in the world would be pretty handy and it’s gotten me thinking about entrepreneurship and maybe even making something out of this blog.
These past few months I’ve been super eager to learn new ways to promote my blog and connect with a larger audience. This has changed my writing style, my posting layout, my titles… I’ve felt at times like my blog has become a bit less personal, and that I haven’t quite gotten past the blogger’s learning curve as of yet. But in the spirit of making New Year resolutions, this year, I hope to make my ANGRY (Friendly) GAIJIN BLOG even better than before (but not necessarily bigger – we all know that if something gets too big, it just becomes painful)… but yes!
And so just like when Laura Prepon guest-starred on House as a blog-addict who couldn’t make a single decision without consulting her followers, I now turn to all of you lovely folks for some help! :)

One thing I’ve seriously considered is monetizing my blog… this could range from putting up ads (hopefully in a tasteful manner) to advertising myself more as a artist and translator for hire. I was wondering if any of you have any experience in this? Or any opinions on the matter?
I’ve looked at 3rd party ads and WordPress plug ins. While the former way be more lucrative, the latter is probably more practical for what I’m doing right now…
Thanks all! And I want to say one more thing in closing: Thank you all for the awesome year in blogging that was 2012! I met a lot of you this past year and hope to keep on reading your blogs this year, too! Thanks for all the likes and comments and from-the-heart conversations we’ve had here. For the Truth!
yours in waiting ;)

I’m starting to think about what to do with my own blog in the future as well… It IS a website in a way (or depending on how you present and decorate it), and as such it can be absolutely anything. Considering the nature of a blog being stories, news, and sharing whatever with the public it boils down to what you can offer yourself. The English lessons are a good start, but how many others are doing exactly the same thing, you know? What makes your blog stand out from various others like it? And what can you do to achieve more uniqueness?
While I’m not 100% on the exact direction for mine in the future, I do plan on banding together with some friends and hopefully pump a great volume of content, of greater variety than I can on my own, and probably in different languages/translations of certain stories both ways if they’re interesting enough.
Just my 2 cents on what to try to ponder.
Totally, man! It’s good to look at the ‘competition’ too, like you say. That is, see what other people like you are doing, and try to offer people something that they can’t. Good luck with your blog! It looks pretty nice! Working in different languages and stuff is a good way to go, I think – that way you can reach a larger audience.
Or think bigger than that aka past just language services. I really can’t begin to project much as of yet, but once I get my footing over there and re-connect with friends and such, I’ll see what’s within reach and what isn’t.
Good luck man! I dig what you’re trying to do. :) Keep me in mind if you need some Japanese translation!
Haha, if you’re good enough at that, sounds great!
Thanks for the great laugh. Whew! I needed it but not the pig heart valve. Ha, ha, ha.
Hahaha, Indeed. :3
I’m looking forward to reading your comic book! :D
:) WHoo! I feel inspired!
Nice resolutions, -especially the one about a comic book. I hope you get to tick that one off during 2013.
Regarding monetizing your blog, I really think you should. You’ve got a great “product”!
Please let me know, if you find something interesting out there. I’m having the same thoughts and since I write about traveling, I’ve even been contacted by companies wanting to advertise on my blog. Though I have the same second thoughts as you probably do. I don’t want to be a sell-out:)
Have a nice weekend, -looking forward to read more from the Friendly Angry Gaijin in 2013!
Thx, Mitzie! I guess I should get back on those comics~~ !_!
I appreciate what you wrote here. If I find anything really interesting, I’ll either let you know or post about it here. Another blogger above talked about using “Adsense Now!” It seems there are some advertising engines that WordPress supports, but other 3rd party ads (like for Amazon) are not allowed.
Sellout!
Seriously, have you read the problogger site? It’s pretty full on but good advice for making $$$. The comic strips are your selling point. Could you put them together into a pdf for download? I’d happily pay a few bucks.
Hehe.
Problogger, eh? I’ll check it out!
I gotta admit I’m kinda new to this book-selling stuff online. But you seem to be doing well with your works~~
Not really sure how monetizing a blog works. But in all honestly it’s the content of the blog that keeps me coming back even if there are ads. Expect for those video ads that auto-play when you hit a site, I hate those.
Haha, noted. I’ll stay away form the video ads…….. can’t say I like ‘em either.
Yo AG (aka Number 2)! Keep doin’ what yo doin’!
Lol, *harkening back to the South Park episode about #2*
NUMBER ONE THIS YEAR, BABY! Mark my woids!
Go for your dreams!!
:3 I’ll do my best! 頑張りますっ!
I am sure whatever you decide to do with your blog will turn out well :)
Thank you, Chocolatier!!
I’m still trying to figure out how to monetize my work. It really is like a full time job. Good Luck!
As for plugins for wordpress, I used Adsense Now! for a short while. It seemed to do a great job at connecting to google adsense and placed the ads fairly well on each page.
Thanks! You too~
Hmm…Adsense Now!, eh? But you stopped using it?
oo you should totally do more comics!! 8D
hope you had a good new year!! and stick to your plans!! I never made any resolutions, I never stick to them!! ^^
just keep advertising yourself I guess !! translating sounds like a good idea!! wish i could help you out more!! good luck though :)
Well I’m inspired by the commissions that you’ve been getting – and then also your Esty account. :) *glowy eyes*
Thanks for the thumbs up on the comics! Maybe I should get back to those a little bit more~
aa thanks!! wow!! \(*-*)/

totally do more comics!!! good luck!! °☆.。.:*・°☆★彡
Heyy, I’m working on a comic right now. :)
Yeah! I was looking around at your drawings~ Nice!
What are you doing it for? Hoping to publish something, or is it for fun?
I’d like to publish it at some point whenever I have enough time to really push forward with it. It’s also for fun so it’s kind of a bonus. :)
